I have more free time than I know what to do with! So today after church, I headed out again. I decided to try a different area of a park today, and once again, I researched beforehand. A local neighborhood history group debates whether a house used to sit on a hill, but after looking at old aerial photographs, I believe that house did exist...along with some stables (which they do confirm). So I figured out the "exact" area of the house, then headed up the hill.
I would be incredibly disappointed yet again! The hill had literally collapsed in on itself (unstable shale), and I found myself walking along what felt like a field that had been single-bottom plowed! The terrain was just horrendous. I was pretty confident that I had found the area of the house, but it was just impossible to detect there. So I decided to just head up to the modern area of the park.
Grr! There would be no silver today!
The park itself ended up being pretty full of finds, though. My first find ended up being rather unique. I found another bullet! This one had met a sudden stop at the end, though. It was buried about 5 inches under the soil. This one definitely hit something hard at the end of its path, as the end was all folded in. Kinda crazy! I'm just amazed at the weight of these bullets, too. I had NO idea they were this heavy!

The mighty bullet. The other side is shaved off on top. It hit something at the end of its travel! |
Most of the rest of the finds ended up being modern clad coins. I enjoy finding money, but my opinion of that was summed up at the end of the day when someone asked me, "You find anything"? My response was, "Just money." ha! I wish it was rings or something! Oh well. I can't be
that selfish now, can I?!
One of the most interesting finds was in the middle of the wide-open grass. I had a couple solid targets so I dug it up. I found one penny...two...three...four! All in the same hole. I took a picture of them in my hand, then figured I better check the hole again before filling it in. BEEP BEEP! Really?! Five...six...seven...eight...nine...ten...ELEVEN!!! This was by far the most coins I've found in a single location, but sure enough, eleven pennies were sitting there in the same hole. I would love to know that story!

11 pennies in the same hole! |
I would find a couple of fishing items, too...a heavy weight and a fishing lure. Then I stumbled upon something pretty Special. I dug up another BULLET!!! This one was unique, though, as it still had yet to be fired! I would find both the bullet and the casing still full of gunpowder. (I had just read something last week about finding live ammo. All it takes is a metal spark from metal on metal to ignite that thing!). A pretty wild find, though. The end of the casing read W-W .38 Special. It was a Winchester!

The bullet and casing. The casing is full of gunpowder. |
I would also find some contraption that I didn't recognize. It honestly looked like an electric paint brush! I still have no idea what it is!
|
Not a clue what this is! It has a button on the right side. |
All in all, it was a pretty good day of hunting, but I won't lie...seeing everyone else running and hiking and flying kites and all made me want to do something with someone! This is definitely a solitary hobby, and it's much easier for me to enjoy in the woods! The park just had too much fun activity going on around me! So I didn't stay out as long today and ended up doing the next best thing to running with someone...a motorcycle ride! The day was just too perfect not to enjoy with something else besides detecting!

The finds from the day. No nails!!! Yay! |
|
17 pennies, 1 fishing weight, 2 bullets, 3 dimes, 3 quarters! |
|
The .38 Special and the unknown bullet with a hard stop at the end of its life. |
|
The oldest coins from the day. Two 1962-D pennies. |
|
W-W .38 SPECIAL. A Winchester .38 Special ready to fire! |
The first silver remains elusive. I came back home and checked out the photos in more detail. Sure enough, the hill HAS collapsed. I need a place to find siiiiiiiiiiiiilver!!!
|
The old horse stable and assumed house there in the middle. |
|
The park today. The tree line is a steep drop-off of where the hill has collapsed. |
