Ok, so that unknown coin about the size of a quarter? Well, it didn't want to clean up. But after seeing that "R" stare at me, I HAD to know! I seriously thought this was just a punch-out from an electrical box until that "R" glared at me. So I tried to clean it with water some more. Nothin'.
So I tried flaking off the pieces of rust with my finger. They flaked, but I feared I was losing some valuable coin! But I just had to know! I searched high and low for some sort of acid (a big no-no, I'm sure), but I had none, so I just threw some hydrogen peroxide on the coin (that did nothing). I tried taking a wire brush to the side without the "R" (again losing valuable pieces, I'm sure), but that didn't help. I had what appeared to be a Girl Scout cookie in front of me...now missing a piece because I also slammed the coin against concrete trying to get some of those surface rust pieces to fall off.
After smashing it into the ground! A piece chipped off. :( |
Well, after all of that, I did find something! But it only quickens me to think that this may in fact have been my first silver...
Notice the similarities between a modern-day quarter and the now-visible letters on the coin behind it. But notice one VERY important difference...the top left of the "R." Today's quarters are have a smooth edge, but the Standing Liberty had a little flare on the "R"! Agh, could it be?!
It took me FOREVER to even find these letters. But the top left of the "R" flares on the old coin! |
The "R" flares! |
The capital "R" would match the "R" that stared at me! |
I have been ever-so-excited to find my first silver, and I don't even get the joy of knowing if I found it or not! This is not how it was supposed to be!!! Agh, it's still killing me!!! The unknown of it all!
[EDIT: After much scrubbing, excitement, foolish cleaning, and research, I have learned that this "coin" is in fact NOT silver. After writing this post, I did some more research. The test was simple. I walked over to the fridge, grabbed a magnet, and put it up to the coin. The coin stuck to it. I then went over to my pile of other coins found and learned that no other US coin (outside of the 1943 steel penny) is magnetic. This could have saved me a night of cleaning and staring! Now...does it really say LIBERTY or am I just hoping it does?! That's the part that doesn't make sense! Those letters seem to line up...if they are letters?!]
