39 Coins...but NO silver or gold!!! Agh!!!

I woke up on my own at 6:57 this morning.  That's the life of a workin' man right there.  I had absolutely no intentions of metal detecting this morning, but while drinkin' coffee and eatin' breakfast, I realized that the ONLY thing I had to do today was check email.  Five minutes later, I'm done.

So I figured I might as well go get rich!  I checked the temps again.  Chance of rain and snow...but a high somewhere in the 40's.  Fine by me.  Windchill was 25 degrees when I left.

I eagerly headed back to the park from yesterday, this time with the intent of concentrating 100% in the grass.  No beach for me!  Just too much junk (last night I spent some time researching sand cleaners...I had some ambitious plans of being kind to the city...until I saw the $48,000 price tag).  I also opted to take some lunch along with me just in case!

I started around a picnic table, and as soon as I started...bing!  I dug up a fishing weight!  ha!  I mean, it made sense considering I was only about 200 feet from the shoreline, but what a surprise.  I would walk a circle around that picnic table, but the only thing worth noting was a penny.  The rest was just trash, trash, trash.  I was intrigued by a bottle cap I found, though.  The drink was Cotton Club, something I had never heard of before!  After getting home, I had much to learn.  The history is found here... http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=CCBACC

Trying to avoid so much junk, I moved out to wide-open grass. I flanked two trees, and I had a hit.  I was thrilled!  I had found ANOTHER RING!!!  This was obviously a man's ring, and it appeared to have some sort of stone on the side of the face.  It also had some very fine lettering on the inside, but I couldn't make it out!  Can't wait until I clean it up!  In the same hole I found a 2002 quarter.

This sight makes one soooooo excited!!!  Would it have a diamond on the end?!

The location of the ring

Unknown ring with unknown lettering on the inside (for now)
Another interesting find was what appears to be part of an earring or bracelet. It has a snake-like design on it (minus the snake). I'm not sure if it's silver or not.  I get way more excited over jewelry than I do coins.  I've noticed that!  I think it's because a story of someone is attached to it.  The coins have stories, too, but someone specific is missing a piece of jewelry!  This one in my hand!

An unknown metal to an unknown piece of jewelry!

The park ended up being an absolute treasure-trove of coins today.  I was hitting them left and right.  One particular hole was especially kind!  I had dug up a hole but found nothing.  I folded my plug back down, and voila!  THREE coins had come up on the side of the plug and were now laying on top of each other on the grass!  I couldn't believe it.  The coins were stacked so that the quarter was actually protected from the elements by the dime (see below).  Pretty neat.  I ended up finding a fourth and fifth coin back in the hole.  I had cut the hole exactly where these coins were and had flung them up when I rolled over the grass.  Crazy.  But a nice 75 cents!  (Some kid had probably asked Mom for money for a pop and fell along the way!).  Thanks, kid!  ;)

75 cents found in one hole!
A couple other interesting finds were an Ohio pin with a pink triangle in the center.  After a quick Google search, I would learn just exactly what that meant:  gay pride.  Oh boy.  And last but not least I found a tiny key...reminds me of the type used for luggage.

I will NOT be wearing this!  :)

I ended up finding 39 coins today...21 pennies, 4 nickels, 9 dimes, and 5 quarters.  But no silver!!!  That is so frustrating to me!!!  I missed it by just one year, too.  One of the dimes is from 1965.  grr!

Another good day of digging.  I'm certainly not getting rich, but the finds are starting to add up.  Of course, I had the NUMEROUS pieces of junk, too.  Today I learned just how terrible those pull-tabs for pop and beer cans were.  I would dig up 21 of those stupid things.  They give off such a good signal, but I hate, hate, hate when that is what I find.  I'm sure glad we moved to stay-tabs!

The numerous finds from the day!  But look at all of those coins!

Now that's what I like to see!

Colt 45, Diet Pepsi, Cotton Club, two fishing weights, key, ring, earring?, pin, coins!

The stuff of worth.

The ring cleaned up pretty good.  It appears the stone is missing, and I'm thinking the metal might be cheap, but I can't tell.  It has a gold/silver tarnish.  I was hoping for some sort of metal composition engraving, but the engraving turned out to be of a different sort.  It simply reads, "Japan."  Oh well.  I still LOVE finding rings...probably my favorite actually.

The ring all cleaned up...and missing the stone.

The engraving reads, "Japan."

All in all, it was another good outing.  I still long for a silver coin, but as stated yesterday, I'm just going to have to dig at older locations.  But I have another $2.61 to my name!  The oldest coins today were a 1967 penny, a 1965 dime, and a 1969 quarter.

The 1965 dime.

The beautiful 1969 quarter.

It was so good to spend the day outside, too.  I had a gentleman come up to me and ask about the hobby, too, so that was nice.  I've had people stare before, but this guy was interested.  (He probably saw me digging holes non-stop...those coins were everywhere today!).

Parks are definitely loaded with cash, too.  It's mesmerizing to wonder how much money really lies beneath the surface.  If only there were an easier way...  :)

Now if only I can find myself a small little treasure chest...

The bounty!  ARRRRRR!!!
